Technical Terms and What They Mean

The descriptions and definitions below are put in simple and easy-to-understand terms (apologies to learned IT professionals!) Please contact us if you want to know more.

What is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)?

You should aim to get your website as high up in the search engine rankings for your service or product as possible. You do this using SEO which means tailoring your choice of words, code, meta data and design to get search engines to recognise your website. The more your website is seen and indexed, the higher your ranking will be. Having a high ranking site is economical in terms of other advertising media. Please ask us for more information.

What is Web Hosting?

A Web Host is a company that puts your website onto the Internet for a monthly fee. Your website has its own address or domain name to allow people to find and view it. A good Web Host will include a statistics package to allow you to keep track of your website visitors.

What is an ISP (Internet Service Provider)?

An ISP such as Telstra, iiNet and Dodo will bring the Internet to your computer via a telephone line. Choose your ISP carefully. You may be presented with many options. You are welcome to discuss these options with us and we can give you some helpful and unbiased advice.

What is a Domain?

A domain is the name and address of your website. It is also called an URL or website address. Your domain must be purchased, registered and renewed. Choose your domain name carefully. You may register for more than one domain.

What are Directories?

They are large websites that contain listings for business websites and sort them into categories. Businesses may have to pay a listing fee to be included. The free directories run through advertisements. The advantage of having your business listed in a directory is having the inbound link. The disadvantage is that you are listed together with all your competitors.

Web Statistics

A statistics package can be attached to your website. It keeps count of how many people visit your website, how many hits are generated and it can track and collate all sorts of information about your website and the manner in which it is accessed.  You may wish to know which page is the most popular, when people click off your site, and how many people fill out one of your contact forms.

Hits Verses Visitors

The longer a visitor surfs your website and the more they click on parts of it, the more hits are generated. The number of unique visitors is more important than the number of hits there are.

What is a Pay per Click Campaign?

When you search for anything on Google, you will see advertisements for products and services on the right hand side of your search results. These are pay by click advertisements.

The advertisements contain information associated with your search and promote businesses who have paid Google for a pay by click campaign. These businesses want to people to click on their ad rather than on the search results to gain business. Google is responsible for putting the ad up. The business pays Google for each person that clicks on their advertisement. The pink shaded area is the most expensive. What is Flash?

Flash is an animation program that allows you to put moving pictures onto your website. However, Google does not seem to like Flash. Please ask us for a discussion about this if you wish to use moving images on your website.

What is Content?

Meta Tags

Meta tags are made up of html (website) codes. The code specifies the website page description and keywords. Meta tags often form part of your SEO data. They are not visible to visitors.

What are Browsers?

Browsers are software applications that allow you to view Internet pages and documents. Popular browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari. Browsers often need to be updated. Websites can appear differently on each browser or on different versions of the same browser. Make sure your website is cross browser compatible so that it looks the same on all browsers.

What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is a search engine friendly programming language that is used to make web pages interactive.

What is a CMS (Content Management System)?

A Content Management System allows you to make changes to your website after it has gone live. It necessary to have a CMS if you wish to add any extra content, change offers or products in the future or if you want to post news and blogs regularly onto your website.

What is a Google Map?

If you click on Maps in Google and put in an address, you can find directions on how to get there. A designer can embed a Google map onto your website. This provides your clients with directions to find your business (even those hard to find) and shows them where they can park. Make sure none of your clients get lost!

What are Image Libraries and Stock Photos?

Some professional photographers sell their photos to image libraries. You can browse through the images in these libraries and probably find almost any image you want. These images (also called stock photos) can be bought for your own use.

What are CSS, XHTML, HTML, PHP?

These are all acronyms for website programming codes. Ask us which would be the best code for your website.

What is FTP File Transfer Protocol?

The way of transferring your computer files onto your web space. Files can be copied, placed in folders on your Web Hosts server and your website code can be modified there. If you are not confident doing this yourself, you should get a Content Management System. Please ask us about this excellent alternative.

What are Keywords?

Keywords are words and phrases specific to your business that search engines recognise and index. They can be used in phrases to describe your product, service or location. The more keywords you have on your website, the more your website is rated by search engines like Google and Yahoo. Keywords and phrases should be carefully blended with the webpage content. What are Template Websites?

These are pre-designed websites that just require you to add your own information. They are colloquially known as cookie cutters. Are they any good?  We don’t know. We would have to look at the design and the code sitting behind it to see if it was search engine friendly before we could tell you that. In our opinion, it is far better to have a designer create a website for you that fits your business. You get more flexibility with the design and can even mix and match elements from three or four websites that you like. See one of the website libraries to get some inspiration.

What are Web bots and Spiders?

These are automated search engine indexing programs. They crawl through your website to gather information and to follow links. This data is then used to rank your webpage. It is normal for a bot to visit your website often, even daily.

What are Cookies?

Small files, which are stored on your computer or web browser, that allow information from the Internet to be downloaded to you.

What is E-Commerce?

Electronic Commerce means buying and selling online. If you wish to conduct your business via the Internet, you will need a specially designed website. Please call us for details.

What is a Blog?

Short for weblog, a blog is an online journal where people can post their opinions and discuss topics. If you have a blog attached to your website, your website content is updated regularly. This encourages the web bots to visit your site to index the new information and in turn your website gets a higher ranking.

What is a Forum?
